maXy (Zelda) vs Pika4Life (Pika) @ SDW

WIP

SV Game 1

BF & Lylat literally suck for us (Pika gets so much from working with platforms), FD sucks for Pika for the opposite reason & T&C Pika doesn’t get much reward from small ceiling/awkward platform positioning.

My thoughts are Pika, he’s like a cheap man’s Sheik, really good combos/strings, hard to hit, but he doesn't have a great neutral, bad range & he doesn’t have many safe approach options.

7:54 P4L spamming empty SH, so DA was a good catch on ascent.
7:51 Pika lands on platform & camps, which Zelda can’t punish. Safe
7:50 His falling Fair, catching my rising Nair attempt. Good on his part. My Nair if earlier would be somewhat safe on shield I think which is why I went for it.
7:46 Bad AD, one thing I should’ve done is either take the hits or jump to safety when there’s an opening (like here).
7:40 Extended hurtbox got a trade. D
7:35 Could’ve shielded/Dash Back. Enough space behind me
7:30 Probably could’ve went to the ledge, platform was coming my way. Possible NL on the Nair if I committed to FF
7:19 The Rising FH Nair I wanted at 7:51 connects. Drop through Nair on his part may have beat it if he did it instantly
7:15 P4L airdodge after Dtilt
7:14 Me being bad & misspacing Usmash
7:09 Safe Dtilt nothing my opponent to do really to punish.
7:04 wanted stage, Ledge Hop Uair wasn’t worth the shield pressure IMO
7:03 good spacing on ledge attack on my part, Uair wasn’t guaranteed but we take those lol
6:57 P4L’s poorly spaced Fair on shield, missed opportunity to kill with FW (if I was baller) or Usmash.
6:50 Banking that P4L didn’t know that QA isn’t safe on shield.
6:39 Shitty combo, Falling Nair > Utilt > Usmash is optimal. Wasn’t expecting Dair at all. Deserved it tbh
6:29 Fuck that spacing against my NL
6:25 Not great Fsmashs, Fsmash probably would’ve traded with QA to my disadvantage. Panic NL but he rushed in.
6:22 Dash attack from this range, Dash Grab needed to be a step closer to get.
6:19 Uair maybe here? FW1 might’ve worked here as well & might get stage for free.
6:18 Fsmash
6:17 TRIGGERED!!!!11!! He Rolls against my Dtilt & gets free grab >=[
6:14 Bad falling Fair trying to catch neutral getup, free reactable ledge attack from me.
6:06 Got the read on the AD here but only got the sourspot
6:05 went for Footstool but it doesn’t happen. Sad times but his punish was bad so
6:01 Got stuck trying to leave the platform. Had a feeling with him going for me so either NL or Spotdodge FW were the better calls
5:56 bad spacing on my part, should’ve went FH Dair if I wanted to go for it at this spacing. Jab or Ftilt at that position since he’s in the spacing for both. Stand on platform >>>>>>>>>>>> Dair
5:52 he’s expecting Beefy FW so he Nairs high.
5:50 my Fair is terrible, his Fsmash doesn’t have a lot of lag. Should’ve landed on stage & take the Fair maybe. Better than going offstage & losing i-frames.
5:41 Desperate DA but he commited to the roll so I go unpunished. DA was me trying to cover ledge roll 10 years too late.
5:38 me either Dairing  which was the right timing for instant ledge grab or me being clumsily re-positioning myself. NL would be baller. Desperate Dair meaning lose stage.
5:35 More desperate moves from me, would’ve covered some aggressive aerials but no grounded options. He TJs the wrong way & gives up stage control. Bait out the shield gets me a grab but I didn’t throw. I’m so sick
5:29 Elevator/Usmash
5:27 Skarfelt AD (me AD at poor timings) which worked out since he committed to an aerial after the whiff
5:26 Should walk more, Dash put me in a position I couldn’t react to QA at.
5:21 He’s deliberately staying in the air for as much as possible to avoid getting grabbed. I was too obviously fishing for them.
5:14 P4L just throwing random moves, not spacing them too well. Caught him with a Dtilt underneath platform when he was fishing/safe pressure. His positioning wasn’t great so Dtilt could’ve traded at worst. Miss Uair, but LK hit him on mistech.

5:07 ran offstage to not deal with his i-frames. Nair was a decent idea, somewhat safe if I didn’t land onstage. No punish.

Ending is BS

Verdant (Puff) VS MagiMagi (Fox) CT2 Pools

Game 1 BF

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T-nTxzcz8-s

1:00 weird hesitation by Magi but free Fair lol
1:01 he baits you to grab with the DJ but since he misses the FF he gets grabbed
1:03 Rest
1:06 you lose center at this point, the Fair wasn’t the best as there wouldn’t be much reason for Magi to jump towards you. Seeing that you jumped with him he reacted with just a simple FF to get grounded. I personally would prefer to keep grounded & see what his response was. This is a situation that definitely needs a look at.
Pound was quite risky here; since it would’ve lost to SH Nair & he could’ve potentially got something big off this. Definitely could’ve reacted to the FH with an Uair for sure.
1:08 Magi favouring laser’s over stage. Hard position for Puff to be in at this % as her moves don’t do too much
Got in close & Magi decides to FH away, slow reactions get you hit tho. Kinda hard to tell with the jumps.
1:11 useless Bair gets punished, he wasn’t anywhere near you when you swung.
1:13 favours Lasers again, you get close & he does the FH escape again. Bad grab, but no punish & you get a weak FH Fair lol.
1:18 3rd time Magi has FH to escape being trapped in the center. Really slow attempt at a grab gets you Nair Shined. Good mindgames by Magi to get the grab tho lol
1:25 no punish from Magi off your Fair
1:28 useless Bair, too far away to be any use
1:30 scary landing, I think you landed at this same spot 3 times as well without Magi punishing you. He mixes it up with a SH Nair but not fast enough. Mint for sure would’ve grabbed that
1:32 overreached there
1:35 eek neutral get-up. Eek no SDI.
1:43 same FH escape, but the punish wasn’t great. Magi favouring to retreat via the top platforms.
1:45 same place that you’ve landed many times before, same FH that Magi does when you land like this.
1:46 don’t like landing this far from center when whiffing an aerial when Fox is onstage. It easily allows Fox to pressure Puff easily if he so wants.
1:49 decent DA to cover unsafe landing. If possible, Fsmash is better at this % in these situations.
1:51 techflubs ;_;
1:58 very risky Pound that doesn’t work out at all ;_;
2:02 got so close to ledge cancelling out of hitstun ;_;
2:08 if that was a Rest I would’ve lost my shit ROFL
2:09 same landing by you, same FH by Magi. That Fair at very best, would hit with the weak hit if it did so it was p bad lol
2:14 learn to react via sound cues. Not sure why Magi keeps dropping shield tho, there isn’t a need
2:17 flub ;_; Didn’t die tho because Magi sucks at edgeguarding. A Puff who has to recover low against a Fox is a Puff who’s most likely gonna die
2:25 got baited into that DA, but Magi goofed up so it’s fine lol
2:31 decent whiff punish but miss L-cancel/misspaced. No punish tho
2:34 OK Magi decides to pressure more whilst your back is to the ledge. You neutral get up is so bad lol
2:41 Uthrow > Bthrow especially since you aren’t at a % that you could die for a Rest. 2nd Bair too low & get flamed =[ Definitely could’ve Pounded before Fox grabbed the ledge.
2:44 bad Bair gets Bair’d
2:46 risky Pound to a Fox that’s dashing in
Another Pound a second later but it seems desperate. Magi decides to keep center instead of directly punishing it
2:51 Magi really sucks at edgeguarding Puff ROFL. Decent Fair but no Jab Reset
2:55 WD Back Grab works against Magi’s Dash In Grab.
2:58 Misspaced the Bair so you take a good amount of unnecessary damage, Magi fucks up the recovery tho so it’s fine.
3:02 Fade In Bair directly above Fox is never a good idea ;_; Magi goes for the easy damage instead of potential kill.
3:10 I really don’t like that Fair, Magi wasn’t in range of it, he wasn’t at a % it would be too useful & you did it far too high. He easily could trade that Fair with his Usmash.
3:11 high aerial gets grabbed. I personally think you faded back from the ledge a bit too much, that plus having your back towards him wouldn’t cover the ledge if he went to it. Got the grab again on his lag tho but mess up the followup on the Uthrow. I’m guessing you choked?
3:18 not sure about how his Usmash hit here, my guess is that he caught you out on your movement.
3:24 got him
3:33 Fair too far away plus that drift was sure to get you punished
3:41 lol Bair wrong way.
It looks like you’re desperate for some sort of hit here, all these Fairs being thrown out but they’re all mistimed & misspaced
3:44 same landing same FH in, got the Bair on the empty fall.
3:47 looks like you jumped into that Nair, that potentially could’ve been the game.
3:51 landing weak Fair is not good lol, needed to CC Jabs if you predict them

Stocks
- Fthrow into AD SD
- Bthrow into FireFox SD
-Uthrow Rest

Stocks Lost
- Neutral get up got grabbed
- Got stuck on top platform & got grabbed
- Got called out on ground movement
- Weak Fair at low % got Jabbed Usmash

Notes
- So many FHs Magi did when you trap him by the ledge & so many times you landed in the same way & didn’t punish him at all for it. Need to practice recognizing patterns in game, which is probably best done looking at various situations like the ones Cheetah posts in the discord, write down what both characters can do & what beats what then review sets
- Learn to edgeguard better, learn how to cover Fox’s recovery from different positions & reacting from audio cues as opposed to visual. Melee CPU Fox will help you with catching the FireFox recovery at the very least.
- Practice reaction-based techchase Rests on platforms. They’re broken lol

4% vs Eigen (Falco) G3 Pools Game 1 Analysis

Did this as a wee exercise to get me started on analysising Melee games

4% vs Eigen (Falco) G3 Pools Round 1

https://youtu.be/uMqLWOyb5fE

Notation based on in-game timer:

8:00 non-neutral start, Falco instantly gets to top platform & 4% GTFO of the there.
4% catches Eigen out of his movement with Bair.
7:58 missed opportunity to take center, since Eigen backed himself into the corner
7:56 got stuck in drop shield animation, needed to WD or SH away to avoid the Nair
Risky shield grab but gets it, jumps too late out of Uthrow to get anything outside space.
7:53 the dash in might’ve made Eigen scarred of a grab hence the spot-dodge, would be a monster Rest if 4% got that.
7:52 Eigen priorities stage over punish
4% mispaced Uair on the retreat but no punish
7:50 good thing 4% didn’t Usmash OoS here lol
the movement here helped minimize the reward from lasers
7:47 bad challenge to Falco’s Nair
7:45 that was a nicely spaced Ftilt by Eigen lol, couldn’t challenge it
SH Bair might’ve hit? Questionable Uair on shield but 4% drifts away to avoid shield grab
7:42 good grab, but Puff needs to Jump with Falco in order to catch him on the platform.
That Fair wouldn’t have done much either, Uair might’ve caught Eigen jumping.
7:40 misspaced Uair, but no punish. Crossing up Falco is generally a bad idea but again no punish
7:37 Fair lost to Dair =/ I know I would do that Fair lmao
Might be a bit slow on the roll reaction but the Bair hit
7:35 catches SH Laser, but the followup Bair was far too early so dropped the edgeguard.
7:32 bad Fair, Falco wasn’t nowhere near the ledge, gets lazered.
7:30 lol rolls
7:29 good wait on the side platforms then took center when Falco when Falco shot high.
7:27 great spacing on the Dair, gets the Fsmash.
7:24 lol that Dsmash
7:20 yea just get out of there because of i-frames
7:18 good spacing on the SH Dair but didn’t got a punish
7:16 Eigen does the same approaching SH Dair & 4% got the right spacing but the grab took forever to come out
7:15 gets pinned by lasers but retreats to side platform to avoid any more.
7:11 bad Nair, followed by a bad Fair that went unpunished.
7:09 Falco does a bad rising Bair but needed the SH for the Uair to connect.
Good spacing on Falco’s aerial movement & gets a Bair on the landing Dair. Drifts too far away for the second one to connect if he read the jump
7:03 Fair would’ve been better here. Got shield poked
7:02 terrible Bair
6:58 good ledgedash to get underneath the Dair, I’m assuming the shield afterwards was a misinput.
Got too close to Falco after the Bair
6:54 scary situation because that easily could’ve been a grab.
Since he went back to lasering from center, there was no need to drop down from the platform. Bad challenge to his Nair
6:46 again, bad challenge to his Nair.
6:41 no.
6:40 terrible shield grab but because Eigen rolled it went unpunished.
6:36 not shieldgrabbable
6:34 don’t think I could agree to that Dair, too high
6:32 position is rough. Not sure what to do really here except maybe WD away?
6:29 really good Uair shieldpoke, but missed the Rest ;_;
6:22 got stuck on the platform =/
6:20 good catch on his jump into techchase situation. Could’ve been big.
6:19 should’ve Uthrow but Bthrow got edgeguard situation, but the FH Fair tho =/
6:15 bad Fair but got clipped by weak Bair, Uair might’ve shieldpoked not sure.
6:14 getting hit by that Dair might’ve been the better option tbh lol because Rest
Good vertical spacing above the lasers. The last Fair was p ehh but he dropped shield so ehh
6:10 good pick up on his roll, Fair’d when he could’ve Rested but got an edgeguard situation.
Good read on his recovery, but the Nair only covered one option which Eigen didn’t go for.
6:02 weak Fair caught spotdodge, but missed L-Cancel/ledge cancel so he missed any followup
5:59 lol Fsmash on drop
5:56 dumb Dair gets Dair’d lol
5:53 lol got phantom Jab’d, nice Powershield
Not a fan of this Fair, far too early & too far. Landing Uair could’ve got Shined or grabbed
5:48 misspaced aerial & got Fair’d & grabbed, not sure why he drifted backwards with the Bair
5:43 definitely could’ve grabbed, more reward than Bair
5:42 good WD backwards, & good shield grab on Falco’s painfully high Dair on shield. Again Uthrow > Bthrow. If 4% predicted that not so great Dair he probably could’ve WD back again & grabbed.
Good Nair to catch the Illusion, but the Fair was so late ;_; Should’ve shielded or ledge cancel to avoid the Dair
5:37 that roll lol
5:35 I like Eigen’s Waveshine away to avoid shield grab, but 4% definitely could’ve escaped here. Another bad Dair, Restable?
He tries to Dair again but 4% does a really good WD OoS underneath him, definitely would’ve gotten shield poked.
Gets stuck in shield afterwards tho & gets DA’d
5:32 good DI away, might’ve clipped Falco with Nair tho if he FF it at the right time. Not a fan of the Dair tho. Missed the L-Cancel lol
5:30 good Fair to stuff his vertical approach, looked liked 4% was looking to ledge cancel it so missed the L-Cancel as well =/
Gets stuck on the platform ;_;
5:27 Uair
5:24 lol Eigen panics, despite getting exactly what he wanted
Bad Fair, far too early & Eigen doesn’t like to approach much, landing Uair could’ve been shined, even if it hit shield
5:22 good Bair to catch jump, the grab might’ve worked if 4% FF earlier?
5:18 I like the Dair to potentially cover any approach from below, the Fair was a bit iffy but 4% fades far away enough to not get punished. WD OoS Shine might’ve hit though if Eigen anticipated it.
5:16 Bad Fair, could’ve been Utilt’d
5:14 Another Fair far too early & this time got hit.
5:11 This Fair looks awfully desperate. SH Nair was too far away to work & gets Laser Dtilt
5:02 I know I’m guilty of this but there isn’t a need to throw out hitboxes like this during i-frames. Better to just trap the opponent unless you know you can get the hit.
Like the falling Fair straight afterwards.
5:00 missed the grab read
Got out of shine range then 4% went for the Bair
Lovely WD back on the getup attack & Fthrow got the kill with bad DI
4:51 that Bair was definitely punishable. The Fair might’ve since Eigen got the PS.
4:49 Decent Fair, at worst that could’ve been traded but that’s fine at this %.
4:44 good spacing round the running SHFF Dair. CC Grab/Pivot grab instead of jump away?
Good spacing on his SH Bair as well
4:41 questionable drift w/ Bair & bad falling Uair. 4% got him conditioned into shield every time he approached like that so Tomahawk grab definitely was usable.
4:38 got shieldpoked.
Lol grab release
4:34 bad crossup but unpunished
bunch of random Utilts by 4%
4:32 good Bair to catch laser.
Need to FF & DJ close to the ground to get a possibility of covering get up options
4:30 good Bair on landing Dair
4:27 bad crossup but since 4% didn’t got punished he just took center stage for free lol
4:26 good pre-emptive Bair to catch jump
2nd Bair caught DJ & that’s game

Stocks
- Dsmash catching Illusion
- Fsmash on dropping shield
- Fthrow by ledge
- Bair catching DJ offstage

Stocks Lost
- Missed techchase Rest
- Bad SH Nair got Laser Dtilt

Notes
- a good number of edgeguards dropped & Uthrow opportunities missed
- got him scarred into his shield a number of times which could have been grabs
- gotta be careful about crossing Falco up
- good avoidance to minimize the effect of lasers during this game

- taking breaks on the side platform is a good way to clear the head when dealing with Falco, if Puff gets the lead it means Falco has to be the one who acts first, either doing FH lasers or going on the offense, which could get Puff center if she’s smart enough

Melee Practice Notes 29/7/16

Melee Practice Notes 29/7/16 started about 3am

Basing it off APS's "The Work" article
http://alexspuffstuff.blogspot.co.uk/p/the-work.html

- 5 min SH Bair DJ (alternating between hit & whiff) - 8 times in a row
- 3 min 30 secs SH earliest FF with aerial drift, FC 22 - 11 times in a row
- 3 min 30 secs FH earliest FF with aerial drift, FC 37 - 10 times in a row
- 5 min double L canceling dair into grab - 5 times in a row
- 3 min general movement around FoD

20 mins Practice

Starting at 1:35pm:
- 3 min 30 secs SH earliest FF with aerial drift, FC 22 - 13 times in a row
- 3 min 30 secs FH earliest FF with aerial drift, FC 37 - 9 times in a row
- 20 min BF Uthrow Platform techchase Rest Fox with C-stick Buffered Jumps - 9 times in a row

Note: The first 5 mins I accidentally used NTSC Fox who is slightly heavier than PAL Fox. Catching techroll in was better today. Might need to practice this at higher % as I was respecting the tech options too much which lead to hesitation.

- 15 min trying to find FD Uthrow 0-to deaths on Fox
- 3 min general movement on DL
